Eyal Gutentag on ways management can help keep productivity and morale up during difficult times
The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted our lives in many ways. Not only has the crisis affected the health of many people, it has also affected our daily routines. As we continue to adapt to the “new normal,” management must be aware of employees’ mental health. More than ever, it is part of leaderships’ job to boost morale.
In this article, business growth leader, Eyal Gutentag, shares 5 ways that Management can keep productivity and spirits high during difficult times.
1. Be flexible.
In a crisis, being flexible is crucial. During this time, your usual management techniques may need to pivot or adapt. Whether it’s adjusting employee workloads, or giving a performance assessment, leaders should consider the current environment and stressors. Now is the time to take into account your team’s personal lives, especially those who are parents or caretakers.
Over the last few months, it has become apparent that work from home teams can actually be very successful. So, be flexible. With a good team, you can trust your employees to get the work done, even if the structure looks a little different.
2. Think holistically.
Right now, employees don’t just need support in their careers. They need well rounded support, for their physical, mental, and emotional health. A great manager allows opportunities for reflection. Encourage your team to take care of themselves holistically. This can include getting a good night sleep, creating a sense of community, and working toward a common good. You may want to provide access to mental health services or other resources that are life enhancing.
3. Always be transparent.
In a crisis, everyone is looking for answers. As a manager, you may not always have them. But during difficult times, you must do your best to be transparent with your team. It is essential that leaders communicate with their employees, and answer any inquiries to the best of their abilities. Transparency is key, even if the answers don’t always sound positive. Your team will appreciate your honesty.
4. Be available.
In trying times, leaders should be readily available. A manager should either be physically present, or available on a virtual platform, in order to create stability and accessibility. Communication is essential during a time that every update matters. Group meetings and one on one check-ins can help employees feel in the know, while ensuring progress.
5. Allow for employee independence.
People often feel high levels of anxiety when they don’t have any control of their circumstances. A pandemic is the ultimate threat to the ego, and your team may be grasping for control as a reaction. While managers still must lead the ship, there is a lot of benefit that can come from letting employees have some autonomy during this time. Trust your team to have some independence, and their mental state will likely improve.
6. Give back as a team.
One of the best ways to boost morale is to give back to the community. This effect is especially strong when community service is performed as a team. Encourage your employees to pitch in where they can, whether it’s with time, donations, or service. Having a common purpose and goal to do good creates a sense of pride within an organization. By giving back, everyone wins!
